The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the military of rigging the rerun governorship election in Southern Ijaw local government area of Bayelsa State for the All Progressives Congress (APC). The governorship election in the local government, was last Saturday, rescheduled to Sunday by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over security concerns. However, as the election got underway yesterday, the PDP claimed that a Major, which it did not name, was behind a rigging process for the APC, noting that the military officer has handed most of the sensitive materials to APC agents to fill and return as results in the evening. The statement by PDP national publicity secretary, Olisa Metuh, read in part “hereby alerts all concerned that the APC and the military have connived to rig the elections in Southern Ijaw local government area of Bayelsa State. “This rigging is being coordinated by the same Army Major who supervised the killings yesterday. The Major has handed most of the sensitive materials to APC agents to fill and return as results in the evening. “Southern Ijaw local government area is the largest in the state and the APC wants to use this scheme to inflate result figures in favour of their candidate.”
