Youths with placards and fresh tree branches are gathered at the residence of the traditional ruler of Badagry, Oba Akran, to protest the alleged shooting of a young man, Joshua Sehunji, by a policeman on Thursday.

Joshua, 23, was alleged to have been shot at about 9.15 pm by an unknown policeman in the Jegba area of Badagry town.

According to eyewitnesses, Mr Sehunji, an apprentice plumber, was having dinner at a food vendor’s stall after closing from work, when a police patrol van believed to be from the Badagry Police division arrived the area with the intention of raiding hoodlums.

Eyewitnesses say the policemen shot into the air and then into a group of people eating at the food vendor’s. The bullet allegedly tore through the abdomen of the unsuspecting Joshua who was eating noodles, ripping it open and spilling his guts on the ground.

The policemen allegedly got into their van and drove off. Neighbours and other people who initially fled the scene came back and immediately rushed him to the hospital. He died shortly after arriving at the Harmony Hospital in Badagry.

The PRO of the Lagos police command, Joseph Offor, said he is yet to be informed of the incident and promised to provide details of what happened after he has been briefed.
